The Forest We Inherited Is Not Always the Forest We Need to Keep

What history, fire science, and old logging records can teach Northern New Mexico landowners about stewardship today.

 

In Northern New Mexico, many forests carry the history of fire exclusion, drought, insects, grazing, logging, regeneration, and human use. Some stands look green and beautiful while quietly becoming more crowded, more stressed, and more vulnerable.


Stewardship begins when we stop asking only:


“How many trees are here?”


And start asking:


“What is this forest becoming, and what does it need to remain healthy?”


That question is at the heart of The Forester’s Eye.


A Forester does not just see trees. A Forester sees structure, spacing, crowns, fuels, soils, water, insects, roads, wildlife habitat, old stumps, young regeneration, past fire, past cutting, and future risk. The forest in front of us is not a frozen picture. It is a living record.

And sometimes, the forest we inherit is not the forest we need to keep exactly as it is.


What Most People See


To many people, a dense forest looks healthy.


It feels cool. It feels shaded. It feels private. It may look untouched, natural, and peaceful. For a landowner who loves their property, more trees can feel like more forest.

That reaction is understandable.


Many people buy or keep forest land because they love the feeling of being surrounded by trees. They want shade, wildlife, privacy, beauty, and a place that feels different from town. So when someone talks about thinning, cutting, prescribed fire, or fuel reduction, it can feel

like a threat to the very thing they love.


But forest health is not measured only by how many trees are standing.

Sometimes a dense stand is healthy. Sometimes it is not.


The question is not whether a forest looks beautiful today. The question is whether it has the structure, vigor, spacing, and resilience to keep being a forest through drought, insects, wind, fire, and time.


What a Forester Sees


A Forester sees the same beauty, but also looks for signs most people miss.


We look at whether too many trees are competing for limited moisture. We look at whether small trees and low branches are forming ladder fuels that can carry fire from the ground into the crowns. We look at whether tree crowns are thinning, whether growth is slowing,

whether insects are finding stressed trees, and whether the forest floor is missing grasses, wildflowers, seedlings, and other signs of life.


We also look at the history written into the stand.


Old stumps may tell us where previous cutting occurred. Old roads, skid trails, rail grades, and landings may show where timber once moved. Dense young trees may show where a stand regenerated after cutting or fire. Openings may show old grass parks, old burns, old meadows, or places where soil, moisture, and aspect naturally limit tree growth.


A Forester’s job is not simply to decide what to remove.


A Forester’s job is to understand what the land is saying.


The Forest Was Never Standing Still


One of the biggest misunderstandings about forests is the idea that “natural” means untouched and unchanging.


Northern New Mexico forests have never been static.


They have been shaped by lightning, Indigenous burning, grazing, settlement, fuelwood cutting, logging, railroads, drought, insects, floods, roads, fire suppression, and changing climate. Some of those influences are ancient. Some are recent. Some helped maintain resilience. Others changed forest structure in ways we are still dealing with today.


In the Jemez Mountains, fire history researchers reconstructed past fire patterns using fire-scarred trees and other evidence. Before 1900, ponderosa pine forests there were characterized by frequent, low-intensity surface fires. Mixed-conifer stands burned somewhat less often and sometimes included patchy crown fire. That matters because it shows that different forest types had different historical patterns. Ponderosa pine, dry mixed conifer, wet mixed conifer, spruce-fir, and piñon-juniper should not all be treated as if they are the same forest.


The Ecological Restoration Institute describes much of the historical Southwestern ponderosa pine forest as naturally variable, with groups of trees, openings, and herbaceous understory. In other words, healthy structure often included space, pattern, grasses, and openings, not just continuous trees from fence line to fence line.


That is an important lesson for landowners:


Space is not the absence of forest. In many Southwestern pine forests, space is part of the forest.


Fire Was Part of the System


Many Southwestern forests, especially ponderosa pine and dry mixed-conifer systems, developed with recurring fire.


Those fires were not all catastrophic. Many were surface fires that moved through grasses, needles, and small fuels. They reduced young tree density, recycled nutrients, maintained openings, and helped keep ladder fuels from building continuously from the forest floor into the canopy.


That does not mean every acre should burn, or that fire is simple to reintroduce. Northern New Mexico communities have lived through painful fire history, and prescribed fire must be approached with skill, humility, planning, weather windows, and public trust.


But it does mean this:


Fire exclusion changed the forest.


When frequent surface fire is removed from a fire-adapted forest, trees can fill in. Needles, branches, and woody fuels can accumulate. Young trees can grow under old trees. Crowns can become more connected. What used to be a lower-intensity surface fire system can become more vulnerable to high-severity fire under dry, windy conditions.


USGS restoration research summarizes the broader Southwestern ponderosa pine issue clearly: these forests have been heavily altered by grazing, fire suppression, and logging; dense young-tree thickets are now common; and restoration often requires flexible combinations of thinning and the reintroduction of low-intensity fire where appropriate. That same source cautions that historical conditions should guide restoration, not become rigid one-size-fits-all prescriptions.


That is exactly where good stewardship lives.


Not in doing nothing. Not in cutting everything. But in reading the site and applying the right treatment for the right reason.


Logging Also Changed the Forest


Fire exclusion is only part of the story.


Northern New Mexico forests were also working forests. They supplied fuelwood, building materials, railroad ties, mine timbers, lumber, poles, and material for homes and growing

communities.


This history matters because many forests that feel “untouched” today may actually be second-growth stands shaped by old cutting, old roads, old rail grades, grazing history, and

regeneration that came in after disturbance.


A Forest Service historical review notes that early military posts, mining, and railroad construction created major commercial demand for Southwestern timber, including railroad ties, mine timbers, lumber, and fuelwood. The same review states that from 1912 to 1914, intensive logging occurred on Penasco Hill in the Carson National Forest to produce railroad ties for a second set of tracks across northern New Mexico. It also records that the Santa Barbara Pole and Tie Company, established in 1909 in the Santa Fe National Forest, cut tie-suitable trees from the piñon-juniper zone to the spruce-fir zone across approximately 66,000 acres between 1909 and 1926.


That is not a small footnote.


That is landscape history.


In the Jemez Mountains, National Register documentation describes railroad logging on the Cañon de San Diego Land Grant from 1922 to 1941 as a cultural and economic event that changed the cultural and natural landscape. During that period, loggers removed millions of board feet of timber from mesas and canyons, and processed lumber was used to build thousands of homes in New Mexico and elsewhere. The same document notes that in 1920, the grant was estimated to hold 425 million board feet of ponderosa pine timber, with

additional large timber volumes estimated nearby.


The Jemez Valley History project also describes how logging companies built rail branches and spurs deep into the Jemez Mountains. It notes that signs of that old logging industry are still visible today in large stumps, old roads, overgrown log chutes, logging camp debris, and railroad beds.


So when we walk some Northern New Mexico forests today, we are not walking through a blank slate.


We may be walking through the after-story of old railroad logging, tie cutting, fuelwood use, grazing, fire exclusion, road building, drought, and regeneration.

That does not make the forest less valuable.

It makes stewardship more important.


The Point Is Not to Blame the Past


It is easy to look back and judge old logging, grazing, settlement, and fire suppression too simply.


But that is not the purpose of this article.


Those past activities built homes, railroads, communities, mines, roads, ranches, and livelihoods. People used the forest to survive and build a future. In many places, local wood use is still part of the culture and economy, and good forest work still depends on skilled contractors, loggers, sawyers, truckers, fire crews, and landowners.

The point is not to blame the past.


The point is to understand what the past left behind.


A stand may look dense because fire has been excluded. It may be young and even-aged because it regenerated after old cutting. It may lack grasses because tree cover, grazing history, soil condition, or shade changed the understory. It may carry heavy surface fuels because thinning occurred without proper slash treatment. It may have old trees worth protecting, young trees worth reducing, and wildlife features worth retaining.


That is why stewardship begins with diagnosis.


Before we prescribe treatment, we need to ask:


What forest type is this? What history is it carrying? What risks are building? What values should be protected? What future condition are we trying to create?


Why Doing Nothing Is Still a Decision


Many landowners hesitate to act because they do not want to harm the forest.

That caution is good. A chainsaw, skid steer, masticator, or prescribed fire used without a prescription can absolutely damage a property. Poorly planned thinning can remove the wrong trees, leave too much slash, increase erosion, hurt aesthetics, reduce wildlife cover, or create a stand that does not match the landowner’s goals.


But doing nothing is not automatically safe either.


Trees keep competing. Drought keeps testing the site. Insects find stressed trees. Surface fuels keep accumulating. Small trees keep growing into ladder fuels. Roads and drainages keep eroding if ignored. Wildfire eventually arrives under whatever conditions exist at that time.


When a landowner does not choose a prescription, the land still receives one.

It may be written by drought. It may be written by beetles. It may be written by wind. It may be written by wildfire.


That is one of the hardest but most important truths in Forestry:


Doing nothing is still a management decision.


Sometimes doing nothing is the right decision for a specific area. Some places should be

left alone. Some old trees, drainages, wildlife patches, snags, cultural sites, riparian areas, steep slopes, or sensitive soils may need protection more than treatment.


But “leave it alone” should be a conscious stewardship choice, not a default caused by

uncertainty.


What Stewardship Actually Does


Stewardship is not the same thing as cutting trees.


Stewardship is the careful practice of deciding what the land needs and acting in a way that

protects long-term health.


In a crowded ponderosa pine stand, stewardship may mean thinning small and intermediate trees to reduce competition and ladder fuels. In a dry mixed-conifer stand, it may mean creating openings, retaining old trees, improving species balance, and reducing fuel continuity. Near a home, it may mean defensible space, access, pruning, surface fuel treatment, and clear evacuation routes. In a piñon-juniper woodland, it may mean much

more caution: protecting mast-producing trees, wildlife use, soil stability, old woodland structure, and erosion-prone areas.


Good stewardship protects the best parts of the forest.


It releases strong leave trees. It retains old trees where appropriate. It protects soils and

drainages. It reduces ladder fuels. It treats slash. It improves access. It considers wildlife habitat. It restores openings where they belong. It prepares the stand for drought and fire. It leaves the landowner with a forest that still feels like a forest.


The goal is not simply fewer trees.


The goal is a better-functioning forest.


What Science Shows About Active Stewardship


Modern forest management is not based on guesswork.


A 2024 meta-analysis of western U.S. conifer forests found strong evidence that mechanical thinning combined with prescribed burning, mechanical thinning combined with pile burning, and prescribed burning alone reduced late

r wildfire severity. The study also found that thinning alone was less effective when surface fuels were not treated, which reinforces a practical field lesson: cutting trees is only part of the job; slash and surface fuels matter.


Northern New Mexico has real-world examples too. In the Carson National Forest, previous thinning and fire treatments helped reduce fire behavior during the 2022 Midnight Fire. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service case study reports that when the fire reached a previously

burned area, flame heights dropped from 200–300 feet to 2–3 feet within minutes, and fire severity shifted downward.


That does not mean every treatment works perfectly forever.

Forests respond. Fuels grow back. Seedlings establish. Slash decomposes or remains. Weather changes. Drought continues. Treatments age.


Recent Forest Service research on Southwestern ponderosa pine found that management

treatments, especially thinning plus prescribed understory burning, can support natural ponderosa pine regeneration, but also noted that high-density regeneration can become an

undesirable outcome in some managed sites. The study’s implication is practical: treatments

need follow-up assessment and modification through time.


That is stewardship.


Not one treatment. Not one project. A relationship with the land over time.


What Good Stewardship Leaves Behind


A good Forestry project should be judged by what remains.

After a thoughtful treatment, the remaining trees should have more room to grow. The best crowns should have space. Ladder fuels should be reduced. Slash should be treated

appropriately. Roads, soils, and drainages should be protected. Wildlife habitat should still

have structure. The land should still feel like a forest.


Good stewardship may leave:

  • Old trees and legacy structure

  • Healthy leave trees with strong crowns

  • Better spacing between tree groups

  • Openings where grasses, wildflowers, and seedlings can respond

  • Reduced ladder fuels

  • Treated slash and improved surface fuel conditions

  • Protected drainages, soils, and cultural features

  • Wildlife cover, snags, down wood, and habitat diversity where appropriate

  • Better access for future maintenance and emergency response

  • A forest that is more resilient but still beautiful


The question after treatment should not be:


“How much did we cut?”


The better question is:


“What condition did we leave behind?”


Historical Evidence in the Woods


One of the most interesting parts of Forestry is learning to read evidence.

A landowner may see an old stump and think it is just a stump. A Forester may see a clue.

Old stumps can suggest past harvest. Fire scars can suggest previous low-intensity

fire.


Dense young trees can suggest regeneration after disturbance. Old roads may suggest

logging, grazing, firewood access, or homestead use. An old railroad grade may point to a

timber economy that moved logs long before today’s roads existed. Openings may be

natural meadows, old grass parks, old landings, old burns, or treatment areas. Heavy surface

fuel may tell us a treatment happened but follow-up work did not. A thicket of suppressed trees may tell us the site is carrying more stems than it can support through drought.


A forest is not just a collection of trees.


It is a record of disturbance, recovery, and decisions.


The job of the Forester is to help the landowner read that record and decide what comes next.


What Landowners Can Do Now


Stewardship does not have to start with a large project.

It starts with attention.


Here are practical first steps for Northern New Mexico landowners:


1. Walk the property with purpose


Do not just look at the prettiest view. Walk the dense areas, the road edges, the drainages, the slopes, the home site, the old openings, and the places that feel hard to access.


Ask:


Where is the forest strongest?


Where is it most crowded?


Where would fire move?


Where are trees already stressed?


Where are the best trees to protect?


2. Identify the forest type


Ponderosa pine, mixed conifer, spruce-fir, piñon-juniper, riparian areas, and oak/shrub communities do not all need the same treatment.

The first prescription is not thinning.

The first thing is understanding what kind of forest you have.


3. Protect the best trees

Stewardship is not only about what comes out. It is about what stays.

Look for old trees, healthy crowns, good spacing, wildlife value, species suited to the site, and trees with the best chance of persisting through drought and fire.


4. Reduce competition where it matters


In overstocked stands, too many trees may be competing for limited water, sunlight, and nutrients. Reducing competition can help the remaining trees grow stronger.


5. Treat ladder fuels and surface fuels

Small trees, low branches, brush, needles, and slash can all influence fire behavior. A treatment that ignores slash may look cleaner at first but still leave heavy fuel on the ground.


6. Think about wildlife as structure


Wildlife habitat is not just thick cover. It can include openings, edges, grasses, shrubs, snags, down wood, seed-producing trees, water, and quiet places left untreated.


7. Protect soil and water


Roads, slopes, stream crossings, drainages, wetlands, springs, and erosive soils should be part of the plan before work begins.


8. Monitor after treatment


Come back after one year, three years, and five years.

Look for tree response, new regeneration, grass and wildflower response, erosion, slash conditions, insect activity, and whether follow-up work is needed.


New Mexico’s Forest Stewardship Program reflects this broader view of management. Stewardship plans address landowner objectives along with wildlife, threatened and endangered species, soil, water, wetlands, recreation, aesthetics, cultural resources, and timber resources.


That is the kind of thinking private landowners need.

Not just fuel reduction. Not just tree cutting. Whole-property stewardship.


The Forest We Need to Keep


The forest we inherited is worth loving.

But loving a forest does not always mean leaving every tree untouched.


Sometimes love looks like restraint. Sometimes it looks like thinning. Sometimes it looks like

protecting old trees. Sometimes it looks like treating slash. Sometimes it looks like leaving a

drainage alone. Sometimes it looks like preparing a stand so the next fire has a better chance of staying on the ground. Sometimes it looks like coming back years later to see what changed.


The goal is not to recreate the past exactly.


The goal is to use history, science, field experience, and landowner values to guide the future.


Northern New Mexico forests carry long memories. They remember fire. They remember drought. They remember axes, crosscut saws, railroads, livestock, roads, mills, floods, insects, and people. Every property has a story.


Stewardship begins when we learn to read that story honestly.


The forest we inherited may be beautiful.


But the forest we need to keep must also be resilient.


Looking Through The Forester’s Eye


A healthy forest is not always the thickest forest.


A good treatment is not measured only by what is removed.

A good stewardship decision asks what the land has been, what it is becoming, and what it needs next.
